Name: Aydin/ A’din
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Dragon Head Hold - Small holding near Harper Hall
Personality: Aydin is one of life’s natural optimists. He doesn’t see the good side of everything so much as enjoys life and things that happen to him. It’s all interesting. It’s all an adventure. Life is worth living because you never know what’s going to happen. (Except in the mornings before he’s been caffeinated, then he hates everything.) Sure life is often full of routine and sameness, but you never know, something might happen that would make it different. Something might surprise you.
He was one of those kids that got into everything and stuck up in the trees because he wanted to see what was up there and never minded getting into trouble afterward because he’d gotten to see what was there. It makes him a bit flighty at times because he’s always wanting to go see what’s that over there. People are great. People are interesting. And there’s so many people. He’s tried to hold down relationships, but he always gets a bit too distracted and - in the other people’s opinions - neglectful. Or at least, he’s just so interested in everything it makes it hard for people to feel like he’s interested in them too, in a specialer way. He doesn’t mean to be. He tries to include them so they can see everything he sees, but they don’t always get it.
This does frustrate him sometimes. He does want to be with someone. To actually have a relationship. Perhaps not settle down, but to have someone who understands the joy of just everything. Who wants to go and see everything out there. Travel and just see things. He tries not to let it show because he is an optimist and he figures that well, there’ll be someone out there for him. He just hasn’t met him yet.
He tries to be charming, but it doesn’t always work. He’s at least nice. That nice guy. The friendly one. It helps with his Harpering. People see him as friendly and harmless and let him get into things he normally wouldn’t. Most of the time.
The Weyr and dragons were always a bit of a distant thing to him. He saw dragons, sure, flying overhead at times, but he never really thought about them on a day to day basis. Dragons were dragons and harpers/holders were what they are. He knew how riders were picked, of course, but never actually spent much time thinking about it because it was too much of a might be and there was far too much actual interesting stuff around.
History:
Aydin’s father runs a small hold that basically is the runner way station for Dragon’s Head hold and the Harper Hall. It doesn’t really have a name beyond the runner station and it’s mostly manned by Aydin’s family, though none of them are runners themselves. One of Aydin’s great grand somethings married a runner and ended up being very good at managing the hold. Aydin has two older siblings, a twin sister and an older brother. There was going to be a fourth child after Aydin but it was a miscarriage. So, he got to be the baby of the family. Even if he was only the youngest by about twenty minutes.
He grew up listening to stories from the runners tell stories about the places they’d been, which fueled his curiosity to see all these exotic places. When he was eight he tried to run away by hitching a ride in a passing tithe train but got caught about a half a day’s journey because he couldn’t stand hiding the entire time. He wanted to see everything. They brought him back home and after a lecture he got to spend the next couple of weeks scrubbing the floors.
He did have a knack for telling stories -like the tale of the drunken dragon which drank all the weyr’s Benden wine - and memorizing the stories other people told. Which didn’t go unnoticed. When his uncle Kricket, the Dorado weyr singer, came down to visit one day his parents suggested that maybe he might be a good fit as a Harper. His uncle agreed to take him up to the Hall.
While not particularly deft at singing he found his niche with storytelling, being friendly and nosey and remembering bits of information people probably didn’t want him to remember. Beyond storytelling, he became a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. He liked learning little bits of everything he could and ended up often being used as a second for things. Never actually able to take the lead in things, but knowledgeable enough to help. This got him promoted to Journeyman and bounced around filling in where needed. It wasn’t something he could do as an apprentice. He taught up at the hold, at some of the surrounding cot holds, ran messages… did a bit of listening at gathers and wrote out stories that others put into song. He could write music, but of course, they always turned out better when someone else polished them up.
While at the hall, Aydin made friends easily, but they were never really very close friendships. People liked him and liked talking to him but there wasn’t really very much besides that.
There were a few brief flings, one with a holder boy that often came down to the hall, another with a harper perhaps a few years too old for him and was really just whenever the harper came in from his assignments. And then one that actually seemed to be going somewhere when the guy, Kiaros, decided he didn’t like the fact that Aydin seemed to flirt with everyone all the time and just dumped him. That one came as a rather nasty shock for Aydin. The other relationships just sort of naturally fell off. This one just got dropped on him.
It was probably one of the very few times that he was actually off his game for longer than a few days. Several months even. It was perhaps fortuitous that he got posted up at the weyr to help the Weyrsinger and uncle, which Aydin was perfectly fine with. He’d managed to mostly rebound and it was somewhere new and different. And somewhere away from Kiaros. Being in the same place with the other man was more than a bit awkward. He avoided him as much as possible, but Kiaros always seemed to make it a point to point out how awful Aydin could be.
He lasted a little less than a month before getting Searched there. Which was a bit of shock. Honestly, you’d think they’d have gotten to him before. But apparently not. The rider was named T’lassen of Blue Seraphath. They’d been chatting outside when the blue stuck his nose into the conversation and let his opinion be known.
And that was a bit of that. He took it in good humor, willing to go along with it - but admittedly he doesn’t really like getting dumped onto the bottom of the chore chain again. He just got done with being an apprentice after all. Though his uncle is trying to get him out of some chore duty - not all of it, of course - to continue and help with the younglings like he was originally supposed to.
Attitude towards Search/Impression: Aydin was rather bemused when he got searched. It certainly wasn’t anything he ever thought would happen to him. He knows he’s on the older side of most searched candidates and thus the likelihood of him impressing is rather lower than the younger ones. He likes being a Harper and won’t mind having to go back if he doesn’t impress. That being said he’s most certainly not going to turn down the chance to impress a dragon. Shells no! That is like… if it happened it’d be utterly amazing and wow and how about that. If anything he rather likes the idea because then he could really travel around and see All The Things! Which is something he’d rather like to do. In his heart he knows that he’s probably a greenrider but doesn’t particularly care too much because, you know, dragon. It’d also be nice to have someone there, because he knows he can be a bit flighty and it’s hard to hold down relationships being like that. Especially from those who want stability.
